Holiday Fun in the Suburbs of NYC

Considering a move from the city to the suburbs and thinking this could be your last holiday season in the city?

Are you afraid of what that might mean for future holiday fun?

Don’t be! Here’s what you can expect from your first holiday season in the suburbs.

Vibrant downtowns

You might feel like you’re trading the bustling city for a much more boring alternative but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In recent years there has been a huge push away from big box/corporate stores and towards local business, and nowhere is this more prominent than in the suburban downtown scene.

The result? Dynamic, engaged business districts throughout the New York and New Jersey suburbs where residents come to walk, shop, dine, and be entertained. The “Shop Small” spirit has caught on to such a degree in recent years that it has enabled a whole new segment of business to thrive in the ‘burbs — pop-up markets! Some of these pop-up markets are around for a few weeks and some are just one-day events, but at these events you can catch the work of talented local artisans, authors, makers, and entrepreneurs, or even possibly turn your own passion into a fun, seasonal side hustle!

Community events

Community events happen all season long in the suburbs.

You’ll be dazzled by community tree lighting events, menorah lighting ceremonies, parades, carolers in the streets, light displays, pop-up holiday villages, and even horse-drawn carriage rides.

You can drop the kids at one of the holiday babysitting services offered by the town or local businesses, attend a fun wreath making workshop, do some “sipping and shopping” at local businesses with friends, grab dinner, and pick up the kids when your holiday shopping is done!

Beautiful landscapes

In the city, “snow day” means trekking across slippery sidewalks to get to work and stepping off of a curb into a deceptively deep puddle of dirty slush. In the suburbs? A snow day is a day to stay in your pajamas and work from home while you watch the snow gather on the trees outside. If you have kids, it means taking a break midday to go sledding down a nearby hill with just a few (not an entire city of) other families and going home to warm up with a cup of hot cocoa. If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can even do a winter hike in one of the many nearby natural spaces where the snow is a beautiful spectacle as opposed to a dirty inconvenience.

With your own house to decorate, you can go as big (or as small) as you want. Your home can be the house with inflatables covering your front lawn and a light display that can be seen from space! You’ll have more than enough room for a tree inside (maybe multiple trees!) and you can make an entire day of going to a nearby farm to cut one down. And unlike your cramped city space, you’ll be able to store your decorations out of sight for the rest of the year. And if decorating’s not your thing? No pressure! Plenty of houses in the suburbs stay undecorated all season long.

Day trips

When the winter weather is on its best behavior, tons of suburban dwellers hop on a short train and head into the city to visit their old holiday favorites. In one day, you can see the tree, take a carriage ride in Central Park, ice skate and shop in the Christmas Village in Bryant Park, have lunch, see a show, and catch up with old friends who still live in the city. If the city over the holidays isn’t your thing, you can also head in the other direction on a ski trip or a quick spa getaway.
