Valhalla

Valhalla is a hamlet located within the town of Mount Pleasant. There are approximately 3200 residents who call Valhalla home. With an enviable under-50 minute commute to Grand Central, proximity to downtown White Plains, and a small-town feel, Valhalla is a special place.

LIFESTYLE

The train station is centrally located in Valhalla’s small downtown area. There are a handful of shops, restaurants and offices conveniently located by the train. Valhalla has a separate school district with a K-2 school, a 3-5 school, a middle school, and high school. Valhalla residents utilize the services of Mount Pleasant for recreation, which includes the Mount Pleasant Pool & Community Center.

Valhalla is a wonderful salt-of-the-earth type community. The people who live there work hard and take pride in community. It’s a decidedly unpretentious place to live. But don’t let that fool you, there are lots of lush parks, stellar restaurants, and fantastic neighborhoods.

For the Kids

In addition to the playgrounds at the two elementary schools, there are many popular spots for kids, including the massive playground at the Kensico Dam Plaza. This playground has mutliple structures for younger and older kids, swings, areas to ride bikes, and indoor restrooms. Train-obsessed little ones will be in heaven in Valhalla. The town sits parallel to the Metro-North track. It’s not uncommon to see trains zooming by just 100 yards away while out shopping. If they want to get a closer look, they can head to the Valhalla Crossing restaurant right next to the platform, which features a train car dining car to sit in and watch the trains go by as you eat dinner in one. After your meal, head to the Village Creamery and Sweet Shop to find some of the best ice cream in the county.

AMENITIES & RECREATION

The Recreation & Parks Department of Mount Pleasant offers a wide range of sports options, activities and amenities for residents of all ages. The Mount Pleasant Pool complex is a popular spot with kiddie pools and lap lanes for adults. You can participate in sports teams for kids and adults, or take classes like Zumba, cooking, Minecraft. There are summer and school break camps and get-togethers including a Kindergarten Party for incoming K students and their families. There are walking trails by the Kensico Dam and many nearby nature venues for exercise and exploring.

Shopping

Valhalla residents have many shopping options in neighboring towns including North White Plains, White Plains, Elmsford & Greenburgh. Target, Barnes & Noble, Whole Foods are conveniently located in White Plains. Central Avenue, with miles of shopping, is extremely close by as well. A convenient place to pass by on the way home from the train, stores in town include a wine shop, pizza restaurant, and a pharmacy.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

In addition to the wonderful offerings in White Plains, the Smart Arts series at Westchester Community College in Valhalla brings film, music, theater, comedy, writers, and more to the College’s stages. Often, these events are scheduled with a global perspective, such as the yearly foreign film series. The Mount Pleasant Public Library has two branches with plenty of programming for people of all ages.

History

Local folklore has it that Valhalla, meaning a “heavenly abode” in Norse mythology, acquired its name in the 19th century when the area was in need of a new post office and name. The heavenly name is an acknowledgment to the Kensico Cemetary, which occupies more than 450 acres just outside the town’s border.

SURPRISE FEATURES

The crown jewel of Valhalla is the Kensico Dam and Park. There is a beautiful playground, walking paths and ample space for bike riding. There are also fairs, festivals & concerts for all ages scheduled throughout the year, including a music festival and several cultural heritage festivals. The park is Westchester’s home for fireworks for the 4th of July. Every December, a monthlong Winter Wonderland festival moves in, with circus acts, pony rides, midway rides, food trucks, and ice skating, photos with Santa, and lots more winter fun.
