History

Princeton University has been the mainstay of the community since 1756. The earliest inhabitants of the Princeton area are the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, but ownership shifted to the Europeans in the later part of the 17th Century. Henry Greenland was the first European to find his home in the boundaries of Princeton. In 1683, Greenland built his house and a tavern. It was in this tavern that representatives of East and West Jersey met to set boundaries for the location of the township.
