History

The Purdys, Hawleys and Keelers are the original familys who settled North Salem. The Purdys were French Huguenots (their name comes from the French phrase “for God”, “per Dieu”, that come over around 1600 and ended up as the owners of 1000 acres in Westchester. Their last 20 that remain are in North Salem on the site of Purdy’s Farmer & the Fish. Registered as a National Historic Site is Balanced Rock, a 60-ton boulder sitting atop four smaller stones, and is a roadside oddity that residents cherish. Balanced Rock is still a mystery, residents always wonder; is it man-made or is it natural? Legend has it the Balanced Rock exists as a celtic ceremonial stone to memorialize the dead.
