History

Manhasset has been through many names: “Sint Sink”, meaning “place of small stones” from the original tribe who settled the area. When Dutch settlers arrived, the area was called Schout’s Bay, Martin Garretson’s Bay, Cow Bay, Cow Harbor, and later, Little Cow Neck, because it was a strong dairy farming community. In 1840, Manhasset was named after the native word “Manhansett” meaning “island neighborhood.” The town was known for its oyster industries and dairy farms. When the Long Island Railroad arrived in 1898, it brought wealthy New Yorkers looking for country homes with short commutes to Manhattan.
