Great Neck is a region on Long Island that refers to nine separate villages: Great Neck, Great Neck Estates, Great Neck Plaza, Kensington, Kings Point, Lake Success, Russell Gardens, Saddle Rock, and Thomaston, as well as some unincorporated areas that make up a peninsula across from City Island and Throgs Neck in the Bronx. Great Neck has approximately 9,500 residents who enjoy a fantastic 25-minute commute to Penn Station. The Great Neck train station is one of the most heavily traveled in the Long Island Railroad system.

The town caters to children with an ice skating rink, pool complex, kids movie program, town camp and much more. Great Neck is also home to Pump it Up, an indoor amusement center that offers huge indoor inflatable playgrounds and jumping arenas. Residents come for open play as well as birthday parties and camp. Bounce Gymnastics which offers gymnastics for kids as young as 6 months to teenagers who train in all the more serious olympic-level gymnastic equipment.

The Parkwood Complex is a neighborhood gem that contains a swimming pool, ice skating rink and tennis courts. During summer months, Parkwood is the home of the town camp. This complex’s recreational facility features several different activities like arts and crafts, ping pong, pool, rock climbing, basketball, volleyball and much more. There is something for everyone, regardless of ability or age. The elementary school also runs many programs for students throughout the year like self defense classes, table tennis, and chess.

Great Neck offers a few different shopping centers such as the popular and convenient Great Neck Plaza with more than 250 fine shops and restaurants, making this a premier shopping area. This includes unique local boutiques, where the merchants take pride in greeting you at the door. Middle Neck Road is a main thoroughfare that contains shops, bars and restaurants. Northern Boulevard is a busier road that also contains several retail establishments.
ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

There is a movie theatre located downtown called the Clearview Squire Cinemas that is adjacent to several restaurants, making it the perfect dinner-and-a-movie spot. The Parkwood Complex also offers activities for locals and there are a number of private clubs for residents to join as well. For a wine-and-painting date night or girls’ night, Muse Paintbar is located in Great Neck Plaza. The Gold Coast Arts Center hosts classes in Dance, Ceramics, Music, Drama, and even Robotics for all ages. There are also special events such as live musical performances. Katye’s School of Dance features programs for all ages from 2 to adults.

History

Pilgrims landed in Saddle Rock in the 1700’s and named the area “Madnan’s Neck” after Anne Hutchinson, who was said to have a temper, hence “Man Nan.” The town flourished in the late 1800s as it became the head of the New York and Flushing Railroad and developed from a farm town to a commuter town.
SURPRISE FEATURES

Great Neck is known for being home to many actors, artists and writers. F. Scott Fitzgerald rented a house in the village of Great Neck Estates in the 1920’s. He and his wife Zelda lived at 6 Gateway Drive. He was inspired by the area and the fictional village of West Egg is said to be derived from Kings Point. He worked on his Gatsby manuscript for the two years he was there. The home is currently a private residence that was recently sold for more than $3 million.
