History

Between 1680 and 1700, the English settled in this borough, which was a prime farming area. The borough was incorporated in 1899, and had many different names before being named as Florham Park. The town was named after Florence and Hamilton Twombly. Florence was the granddaughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt, the richest man in America at the time. She and her husband moved to the area and named their 800-acre estate “Florham”, a hybrid of both their names.
